Modu Magazine: A Tale of Urban China

Portfolio: Hong Kong’s sky-high slums

The photographers Rufina Wu and Stefan Canham are the authors of the book Portraits from Above: Hong Kong’s Informal Rooftop Communities, in which they present their photographic project about slums in Hong Kong’s old neighborhoods. While in Beijing the informal habitat is underground, Hong Kong slums are located on the rooftops of the financial metropolis.

The artists focus particularly on the architectural structure of these informal settlements, on their organization into micro-village and on the identity of their occupants – usually immigrants that represent one of the poorest communities in Hong Kong.
