Modu Magazine: A Tale of Urban China

Exhibition and conference explores Beijing’s Hutong and Courtyard homes

Organized by the Office of Cultural Affairs and the Office of Archives in Beijing, the exhibition “Beijing Hutong and Courtyard Houses” is open to the public from June 12 to October 21, 2012, in Beijing. Over 130 masterpieces and pieces of antique furniture, as well as five hundred archives – photographs, drawings, documents, etc., are on display at the Capital Museum.

Spanning from the 15th century – the origins of Beijing’s urban fabric – to today, the exhibition seeks to trace the evolution of the hutong, and its courtyards or siheyuan (四合院) and their inhabitants. A series of conferences (in Chinese) has also been organized to discuss issues related to urban life in the hutong and in the historical center of Beijing. The speakers are Chinese researchers, experts, officials and journalists.
