Chengdu struggles with severe traffic congestion

With two million vehicles on its roads and average daily traffic reaching 490,000 vehicles, the city of Chengdu has planned the implementation of measures to attempt at reducing traffic congestion and air pollution.

The chosen restriction is the alternate traffic circulation already in place in Beijing since 2007. Even though this measure would reduce air pollution by about 7%, it would have no direct impact on decongesting the city’s traffic (according to a study on the effects of similar measures taken in Beijing).
