Art in Beijing’s Subway

Designed by the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), the revised aesthetic of stations along Beijing’s new subway lines 14 and 15 are attracting the attention of users. This is not the first time the Design and Urbanism Department of CAFA has been involved in the refashioning of the capital’s subway station interiors.

In 2007, seven other stations on lines 4, 8, 10 and on the Airport Express were also decorated. While the styles are diverse, each line is in harmony with the general theme. For example, on line 4, the wall paintings combine old Beijing styles and subject matter. The new line 15 also maintains this approach, each of the dozen stations being set up with traditional architectural features.
