Modu Magazine: A Tale of Urban China

Beijing in six acts

Taking up the Chinese oral tradition of communicating criticism towards officials through opera characters, Yang Sizhou, an architect who received his masters from EPFL (Switzerland), has transformed Beijing into an open-air theater where actors in China’s “city of culture” are the main characters in a play.

Six iconic locations in the capital are depicted in the play’s six thematic acts: Tabula rasa for a new China (Olympic Park), the traditional and neo-traditional (Qianmen), let us beware of appearances (Shichahai), regenerate the expired (Siheyuan), from legal chaos to urban void (Sanlihe), art of the urban Village (Caochangdi).
