Shanghai Bund, commonly called The Bund, is a waterfront area along the Huangpu River which began to develop in the 19th century through international trade, following the Opium Wars. Its Chinese name is Waitan, which means Outer Banks, because of its location outside the original city of Shanghai (inside Renmin Road). In the 1940s, its buildings, featuring various classical Western styles, housed many major financial institutions. After a slight decline of its former activities and some refurbishment operations that took place after the 1980s, The Bund has become the most famous landmark of Shanghai. It consists of a public riverside space which enhances the perspective on both the colonial heritage and the Shanghai Pudong skyline across the Huangpu River.
