Modu Magazine: A Tale of Urban China

When architecture becomes literature

Architecture students of the China Academy of Arts (CAA) in Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang province in eastern China, chose this year to modify the format of their graduation work. In order to diversify the mediums of expression, each of the 15 students has joined a short novel to its drawings, addressing themes such as movement, environment, death, the underworld, the universe, the future, love, science fiction, or myth. The novels are interconnected through a common portfolio, exhibited along with the original drawings.

The exhibition invites the visitors to build their own idea of architecture through personal exploration of the commonly produced art work. This innovative initiative aims at exploring the benefits – and limits- of an interdisciplinary mix of mediums in the understanding and study of architecture.
