The role of Christianity in the modernization of Gulangyu Island in Xiamen – Lecture

Liu Jinfen, PhD candidate at Leiden University and holder of the CEFC mobility scholarship, will present a lecture entitled “The Passing of Glory: Urban Development, Local Politics, and Christianity on Gulangyu Island, Xiamen” on November 23 at Tsinghua University.

After the defeat of Qing government in the First Opium War (1839-1842), Xiamen was forcibly open to the outside world as a trading port. In the mean time, Christianity appeared as more Westerners came. Gulangyu Island experienced a rapid modernization, in which Christianity, according to Liu Jinfen, played a major role.
