“Our Block” – Public Space Design Competition for Chongyong Street, Beijing

In order to protect and revitalize one of its traditional street, Beijing is now launching the call for innovative ideas “Our Block – Public Space Design Competition for Chongyong Street in Dongcheng District, Beijing”. As an ancient street with strong historical atmosphere in Beijing’s old city, Chongyong Street has become a multi-functional street of culture, commerce, residence, and tourism with the accelerating pace of modernization. The competition aims to improve the environmental, commercial as well as living quality of the block, while protecting the original fabric and cultural structure of the old city.

The design scope of the competition will focus on four spacial nodes along the street and its prolongation — Ciqikou Street, Zhushikou East Street (Qiaowan Section), Qianmen Dongxiao Street and Yonghe Temple Street. This competition aims to collect ideas for the planning and design of the public space’s “interface” for social interaction, rest, and connection. The competition also aims to stimulate the public participation in this process of urban renewal, which facilitates the cross-domain cooperation between residents and design professionals.

The competition invites university students, public groups and individuals to participate. Excellent ideas will be awarded and presented at the Beijing International Design Week 2018, and might be integrated in the practice.

Calendar of competition: phase of design from June to August 2018; phase of evaluation from early August to mid-August 2018; phase of presentation from late September to early October 2018. Winning projects will be publicly displayed at the Chaoyang Gate branch hall of Beijing International Design Week 2018
Awards: Best Design Award (2 groups) 30,000 yuan, Best creative award (4 groups) 20,000 yuan, Excellent project award (several groups) 10,000 yuan
