Modu Magazine: A Tale of Urban China

Beijing Design Week 2016

With each iteration following the project’s inception in 2009, Beijing Design Week strives to facilitate a process of exchange between creative industries, academia and publics in order to challenge and inform contemporary Chinese design discourse and practice. Often locating these dialogues and sections of its curatorial programme within areas of the city undergoing transformation, BJDW allows the urban context to formulate its own answers and understanding of what design might mean in a megalopolis of the 21st century like Beijing.

BJDW 2016 centred around the theme of “Design 2020” and its two-week programme of events, exhibitions and activities stretched across iconic areas, districts and commercial venues of the city in nine component sections: the Design Night, Thematic Exhibition (‘Ethics of Technology’), Guest City (Seoul, ‘Smart City, Smart Design, Smart Life’), Design Awards, Design Forum, Design Market, Design Service, Design Trade Fair and Design Hop. Aligning with growing governmental interest in increasing the added value of China’s creative industries for economic growth, BJDW 2016 has more closely embraced the logic of design as pre-packaged, finished goods delivering content and value to consumers.
