Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai linked by a giant maritime infrastructure
The reorganization of the Hong Kong territory towards the West, which started in the 1990s with the construction of the Chek Lap Kok airport on Lantau Island, continues. A South China Morning Post infographic presents the construction of a bridge linking Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai. This project’s main goals are to stimulate economic trade in the Pearl River Delta, as well as to foster the mobility of individuals by reducing transportation cost and time.
Discussed for decades, this giant infrastructure was originally expected to be open in 2016, but it was delayed due to technical difficulties associated with building the underwater tunnel, the intense maritime traffic and climate issues. This 42km-long “bridge” actually includes a sub-marine tunnel, in order to not hamper the maritime communication routes.
